It 'very clear that he is simply reading from a script – it is a rare instance in which the narrator has a deep knowledge and personal subject matter. br / br / – Shelby Foote …. Shelby Foote …. Shelby Foote (author of The Civil War: a story (3 vol. Set). I can not imagine "civil war" without the commentary provided by Shelby Foote. It 's like trying to imagine your right shoe without a left – you can seem ok, but just would not work. ShelbyFoote and his draw was something to look forward to Mississippi in the series. His comment was not only insightful, but offered a sense of reality that is unmatched in other documentaries. I remember listening to stories by a favorite uncle – the one who had first hand experiences of events and a flair for storytelling that keeps you on edge-of-your-place. Shelby Foote makes the whole mini-series to feel personal and intimate. I could go on for days about his contribution toThis documentary.br / br / – The soundtrack – The Ashokan Farewell Song: From "The Civil War" (Intermediate String Orchestra), is an inspired choice as a basis in history. Ashokan Farewell is truly alarming and emphasizes the melancholy of the whole series. While "Ashokan Farewell" may be the star of the soundtrack certainly does not stand alone for its contribution. Once again, Ken Burns is able to use music to weave together the narrative, images and commentarymake a close and exciting story.br / br / – The images and the use of "Ken Burns effect" – I think this is now expected by Ken Burns documentaries, but again in "The Civil War", adds Stark realism about persons who have participated and died in conflict.br / br / – The story is balanced so that no one will agree 100% with the interpetation. For example, in the peculiarity Shelby Foote admits he feels that Burns focused too much on slavery. However, Shelby Footehas a southern bias is therefore expected that he was not completely comfortable with this aspect of the documentary. br / br / Final Verdict – should be required viewing by all Americans. Ken Burns is an exceptional director and producer, but "The Civil War" is truly inspired and will probably remain the largest of our documentary lifetime.br / br / 5 stars
