The Trials of Van Occupanther

When I heard "Young Bride" on the local indie station, I was hypnotized — — she was beautiful and I tracked down the band name and album title and ordered "The Trials of Van Occupanther." At first I was greatly disappointed, knowing nothing of Midlake, or that it was an album of 70's revival. But then "we gathered in spring" has grown on me, and then some reading on the clear intent of albums, and a bit 'longer hears me hooked. The songs are brilliant craftsmanship, great voiceharmonies and hooks you'll be fighting to stop humming. The sound reminds of so many '70s acts, as others have written, but it reminds me most of the early Pink Floyd, ala "Obscured By Clouds" — an extravagant, quasi-folk fusion early showing of exceptional talent Roger Waters'. Add some 'England Dan …., America, CSNY, gangs and the like and you get an approximation of the sound. And even if Midlake, on "The Trials .." Sounds almost like a 70 per band, which still canto defy sounding tired or just copying. “The Trials of Van Occupanther” is immensely enjoyable. Maybe I’m missing something, and certainly don’t want to detract from the album’s brilliance, but there is an element of silliness here, whether intended or not. Lines like “Would you ever want to run with bandits?, See many places and hide in ditches” sung to a seriously lilting tune cannot help but remind me of Monty Python and Spinal Tap (during their hippie phase…), and there are several points where this happens — a song based on the whole not being able to find their friends ( "Head Home", saying "no one seems to be around, I think they went away without me again I 'll Head Home ") makes me smile, even if it is one of my favorites and is musically fantastic. I like to think that this is a bit 'satire on trends than about 70's music. If I go basic or not in my assumption of the text in points, this album is one of the favorites. It ismusically so gorgeous, even if it takes some listening for open to it and to appreciate how well Midlake captured the atmosphere of this style of 70 songs (a marvel in itself), which comes highly recommended.

This one grew on me until I now believe it to be Perfect album – C. Prescott – Minnesota
I had this album for about a year until I really gave a SERIOUS listen. You know what I mean … not a 'Oh, what is this new band' listen … but with a tone down every text, melody, mix, and the general "feel". I truly believe that if you do this you will realize that it is absolutely impeccable. I tried to find something to nit choose, but I just could not. And every time I listened through it, I liked it even more. The voices are amazing and the words tell a story that you can almost make barelyout .. leave to fill in the blanks. The mix is incredible, there is so much still in progress and has never sounds cluttered at all. Each instrument has the perfect tone for each song. The atmosphere is very relaxing and exciting … a kind of big happy sigh. ~ I seriously cannot get over it. Not say these things of my favorite bands. And 'obviously took some time crafting every little detail of this album. br / br / If you really love and understanding of music there is no waynot enjoy this album. Very few people who gave this album a bad review to confuse my mind. I wonder what you hear? All about Guitar Hero? The hope that whatever God you pray to forgive them for that.br / br / One review wrote, "The best songs on this album sound like the worst of the Fleetwood Mac catalog after ingestion of poisonous mushrooms." br / br / Sound pretty damn good to me! / Br hahahabr / lovebr very /

mind/body/mind/body/ numbing bliss – L. Mas Perron –
My faves are Roscoe, Van Occupanther, and in this field. A record you can listen indefinitely. In my opinion better than almost as good as Coldplay and Radiohead.

The Past Viewed through the Present’s Lens – Pundit 59 – Columbus, OH USA
There are a number of songs from my youth in the 1970s and 80s, which are brought to mind by this music – mostly good stuff. If one loves some elements of the early Eagles, CSNY, Fleetwood Mac, and it is likely that this record you spend a lot of time spinning in your drive. Fortunately, the music is made so as not to discount the following years – is not "back" in some way self-conscious and ironic – and offers the modern way of text-only approach and songstructures. I found three or four of the songs especially beautiful and moving, are worth the price of the whole set. My only complaint with this particular version, it has to do with a homogeneity of structure and appoaches instrumental, otherwise I would have given another star or two.

Hoodwinked by hit singles, do they not know more than 2 chords? – torque – NYC, United States
I was blown away by "Roscoe", then I heard "Head Home" and the thought both of these songs were quite catchy, provocative intro and verse, chorus melody, rather than transitions, memorable hooks. I bought the album and heard the rest, what a disappointment. Most of the songs just dragged on monotonously. The album became a cry fest exhausting repetitive. I tried to listen to the same thought I would hear something I missed, nope. The more I listened to the 2 to alternate arrangements (which is what mostthe song seemed), the most painful I am bored, it's like I'm hearing the same song with different words 10 times in a row. Hooks / accompanying instruments do not add any spectrum or dynamics whatsoever. If you like Roscoe, just buy the single or the first three songs. Everything after that (except for in this field) is not worth it.
