Long before Henry Fonda played an irascible patriarch in IOn Golden Pond/I, he played an equally crusty family man in this warmly rustic, 1963 drama ISpencer’s Mountain/I, based on an Earl Hamner Jr. novel that later inspired the television series IThe Waltons/I. Fonda plays Clay Spencer, a fiercely independent, hard-drinking, foul-mouthed Wyoming laborer who believes in God but rejects (to his tiny community’s consternation) organized religion. Scraping together enough money to build a new house for his wife (Maureen O’Hara) and nine children, Spencer runs into an obstacle to both his plans and family pride when his college-bound son (James MacArthur) romances the daughter of Spencer’s boss. Director Delmer Daves whips up a kind of morose schmaltz out of the earnest material, but it’s Fonda’s grit and heartland integrity that carry the day and establish some self-effacing wit. Some nice features here, including interviews with Fonda and a short documentary, “Spencer’s Mountain: Grand Teton Premiere.” I–Tom Keogh/I

Some disclaimers – I've never been a fan of the Fund or O'Hara. I'm OK – but I do not buy this movie because of them. I bought it because it was based on Earl Hamner's book.br / br / Others have compared this to the Waltons, and others have griped that it is not right to do so. I think it's a good "outline" for The Waltons – The Waltons was a fine finish work. br / br / I was more put off by the insipidness of the characters. The boys were just caricatures underdeveloped … Henry Fonda wasunnatural, as was O'Hara. She did not seem like someone who was one …. poor wife to the mountains, but IMHO the biggest waste has been the lack of use of the grandparents. The TV show, Grandma and Grandpa Walton has been impressive. In this film, the grandparents are tasteless, colorless, very similar to something that needs more salt and spice.br / br / The story was OK. I have been a difficult time grappling with the exact time we were in – if I then had to be the depressionI think the only thing that made it appear that it was the fact that Spencer had no car and an old wood stove in the kitchen. (no mention of anything to give us time, but when I went to the campus, I have seen car 1950 type, and the Wardrobe was permanently after years of war, probably late 50s early 60s.) This is frustrating, because part of the charm and draw for the Waltons, for me, was the period of time – the period clothing, old fashioned cars and radioperiod of other specific elements. Seems to me that this film was put together wrong and should be a success simply because of Fonda and O'Hara. Br / br / If you think of as an "in principle" for a major, after work, then this is a good movie. I'm glad I bought, and look again, only to find all the elements that later turn up in the seasons of the Waltons. LOLbr / br /
