I agree totally with the 5 stars given in other reviews of this wonderful Dicken’s LITTLE DORRIT, including the Masterpiece Theatre’s outstanding version of the story concerning the odd institution of Old London’s debtor’s prison. I’m not sure why I never read the book, the title may have thrown me off. It sounded just a little too sentimental–even for the melodramatic style of the great writer. In a sense it is a little different from CD’s usual themes of class oppression. Oh, that exists in LITTLE DORRIT, but there is a more gentle presentation here, balanced by every day life. Dickens concern for the idea of Forgivness is here too, but not so many people to be forgiven. There is a surprising multi-racial theme as well, but only revealed near the conclusion. I am not aware of this idea existing in any other of Dickens’novels. The revealation in the plot very neatly ties up several subthemes. Like so many modern movies, the next to final action in LITTLE DORRITT is a stunning, Armagedon-like destruction. This too was a bit unusual for Dickens–and, of course, it works perfectly under his skilled vision.br /br /Also, like so much of CD’s work, LITTLE DORRIT is highly autobiographical, perhaps more so than the other novels. The theme of debtor’s prison struck home to Dickens because his financially irresponsible father ended up in one. The child Dickens was sent to live work in a printer’s shop. It was not a pleasant experience. It hurt the boy most how easily his mother acquiesced. He never really got over his feeling of betrayal. Strangely perhaps, he was often less than fair in dealing with his own wife children (there is a character in the book who is a rather cruel parody of his overweight wife.). All this aside, LITTLE DORRIT is neither an angry or bitter tale. It is more a love story told in the many facets of that emotion.br /br /If you’re building a DVD library, you’ve got to include Dickens; and if you are building a Dickens section, this version of LITTLE DORRIT is an absolutely essential.br /br /The Charles Dickens Collection, Vol. 1 (Oliver Twist / Martin Chuzzlewit / Bleak House / Hard Times / Great Expectations / Our Mutual Friend)

“Little Dorrit Discount” Overview
Characteristic of Dickens’ later writings, “Little Dorrit” is a social condemnation, particularly of the system of prisons set aside for the debtors of England. Through the memorable characters of Amy and her father William Dorrit, as well as the disenchanted Arthur Clennam, recently returned from abroad, Dickens weaves a suspenseful tale that plumbs the depths of confined minds. Despite the changing fortunes of many of the characters, financial scandal is never far behind them, and they must seek freedom in unexpected ways. Dickens fully employs his masterful irony, humor, and mature writing to create a powerful story about both physical and psychological imprisonment, as well as the freedom of a spirit that feels love.

Another definitive BBC Classic in every way!!! – Dazy –
Davies shows his genius yet again in bringing forth this Dickens classic. Just like Pride Prejudice and Bleakhouse, this intricately weaved tale will stay with you forever!! Sidenote: I really enjoyed the cast, though many may be disappointed with Arthur Clennam as PP’s Mr. Darcy was a bit more handsome back then
A little sad about little Dorrit – Patricia A. Houston – Honolulu, Hi. USA
I loved Little Dorrit as a novel. But I could not make heads or tails of the dvds. It was a kaleidoscope of complexity that did not progress, but also did not end in a satisfying manner. I require that all film end in a way that makes me more deeply understanding of the basic story. There were some themes that came through: the pride of little Dorrit’s father in his elevated role inside the debtor’s prison, but the little Dorrit I imagined from the novel was not an insignificant figure, a simple tattered waif. She had something compelling about her in the novel that transcended her pecuniary status.br /br /I am not angry at the people at BBC who tried to bring this novel to film. But they need to try again, and I will buy it if they do. I must read the novel again in order to even understand the dvd. It is a hodge-podge of miscellany from the novel that does not explain the novel. I can imagine how hard it is to do Little Dorrit. I know only two people personally who have read it, my sister whom I practically bludgeoned into it, and my old, favorite college professor in English who really cared for it, as I did and do. It is one of my favorite English novels.br /br /Maybe I need to say I love the BBC and Masterpiece theater. I adore what they did with Jane Eyre. I had read the novel, been to the pastor’s cottage, seen all the many graves, walked Top Withens. And I feel they did marvelous things with the Jane Eyre dvd which I watch often, but Little Dorrit is not whole, does not exemplify the little child grown into a woman who was little Dorrit in a debtor’s prison. I cannot help the people who made this film. I could not read my novels by Dickens aloud to my husband because they did not translate from reading to speaking. I only know I read almost every Dickens’ novel that existed, save Pickwick Papers. I loved Dickens’ novels. It took me almost a year to work through them. And in that year I discovered Little Dorrit, which I had great liking for.
Dickens Classic – R. Johnson – UT
This is a classic that every Dickens fan should have. There are a lot of colorful characters and the story is long, but well worth the effort. Richly rewarding.br /
