Director Michael Powell and screenwriter Emeric Pressburger, the team responsible for the mid-forties masterpieces iA Stairway to Heaven/i and iThe Red Shoes/i, decided to shoot iBlack Narcissus/i entirely in the studio, so they could create their own controlled, slightly unreal world. The choice paid off, as both art director Alfred Junge and cinematographer Jack Cardiff won Oscars for their blazing Technicolor work. The climactic sequence–a murder attempt on the cliffs of the cloister–bears special attention, as Powell “set” the sequence to a preexisting musical track, staging it as though it were a piece of visual choreography. I had heard many good things about this, and the criterion is usually the mark of quality, so I was surprised to see a well-shot, but oddly film.br idiot / br / I read the rave here and feel like I saw a different movie. What I watched was a mixture of local and poor quality mince. The sets are sweet, but how can you run all the time in shorts during the winter in the Himalayas? One does not. Neither see parrots there. And so on. If you intend to make the film seem realthen follow up with details. If it was meant to be satire or camp, all right … but this feels campy in all the wrong ways.br / br / The script made me choke with laughter at points. Apparently the nuns and women in general, are dying to be with men, not God. Almost everyone, really. Who knows? All of this felt like a strange joke, certainly not the legend of the cinema some claim it is. Plus got boring as all get out within an hour. The catfight was beyond silly, but par for the course in this studypicture that is neither allegorical nor realistic nor convincing. I half expected Ed Wood to jump out from behind the rocks and shouting, "Cut!" moments.br a / br / I believe Black Narcissus is forgotten by all drugs, but for all reasons.br certain film Law / br / So, bring on the negative votes, fanboys! Painted scenery, miniature models, local and botanical gardens stand in the Himalayas. Scene after scene is lushly beautiful and exquisitely composed. Incredibly, this was all filmed in a London studio – not the windswept mountain that the viewer seems to be looking at.br / br / The sisters seem to have any serious doubts about their vocation, and the thrust of their lives above. There is sexual tension resulting (usuallymasterfully subtle) between the sisters and male colleague of the king. Bella Deborah Kerr somehow manages to pull off the role of a rather serious but compassionate, a young and rapidly growing Sister Superior, in any decent time, but often exude sensuality. She is always dressed in full with only partial face exposed. Superb performance. The viewer is left with the gray areas to guess regarding the true intentions of the players. Ultimately, this film speaks of spiritual ideals against the realities of the natural world, which, by comparison, is not so tidy.br / Each scene reinforces the idea thatboth religion and obsessive romantic love are both similar forms of insanity, who perform their intricate dance background impassive the natural world. br / br / This is a film whose eternal themes are supported by classic images charged subtext – charming and sophisticated and literate work of art come up with great finesse.
